Hunter Education in 2009: • 11,910 people were certified in 284 hunter education courses. • 737 people participated in 19 advanced hunter education events. • 50 new hunter education instructors were trained in 13 instructor courses. • 227 hunter education instructors were retrained in 10 workshops. • 784 hunter education instructors currently in the program. • 13,966 hours hunter education instructors spent teaching hunter education courses, instructor courses, and advanced events. • 3426 replacement hunter education cards printed on the new online system by the public between 7August and 28 October. • 2964 annual average number over the last five years for manually printing replacement hunter education cards. Other Numbers: • 69,603 people certified in Kentucky ’s hunter education program over the last five years. • 44,156 Sportsman’s Licenses sold in 2009. • $4,194,820 revenue from Sportsman’s Licenses in 2009. • 46,700 Elk Lottery Permits sold in 2009. • $467,000 revenue from Elk Lottery Permits.

By working together to present the most comprehensive and enjoyable Hunter Education classes possible we hope to encourage everyone to have many years of safety in their enjoyment of our Hunting Traditions. |

Since Kentucky Hunter Education became mandatory in 1991: • Hunting incidents involving a firearm have decreased 23%. • Fatalities in hunting incidents involving a firearm have decreased 50%. • Fatalities in all hunting incidents in have decreased 38%. • Hunter Education is working in Kentucky .

Hunter Education Overview |

All hunters born after Jan. 1, 1975, shall have a valid hunter education card IN POSSESSION WHILE HUNTING. A card is not needed for purchase. Exceptions: 1) Children under 12 may hunt without a card if accompanied by an adult. 2) Persons exempt from a hunting license are also exempt from hunter education card requirements (i.e., landowners; military on furlough). 3) Persons with a Hunter Education Exemption Permit may hunt without a card while accompanied by a legal adult hunter.
Thanks to hunter education, hunting is safe and getting safer! Hunter education covers the skills, regulations and responsibilities of hunting, wildlife conservation and the outdoors. In this class you will not learn how to hunt but will learn how to hunt safely.
THE COURSE COVERS: • Ethics and Responsibilities • Wildlife Management/Conservation • Modern and Primitive Sporting Arms/ Ammunition • Safe Firearm Handling, Cleaning and Storage • Outdoor Skills, Survival and First Aid • Wildlife Identification • Trapping • Bow Hunting /Tree Stand Safety • Live-Firing and Field Exercises (You are required to fire at least one firearm to pass the course |
